Calendula Balm

Calendula flowers take six weeks to infuse properly. We pick them, dry them slowly, and steep them in oil until it turns deep gold — and that gold oil is what this balm is built on.

Around it: coconut oil, shea butter, hemp and beeswax, with jojoba, avocado, chamomile and raspberry seed. Rich, and it stays where you put it. Hand-poured in small batches.

Who it's for

Dry patches, rough elbows and knees, weather-worn hands, and skin that needs more than a lotion gives.

Gentle enough for children. It is the one we reach for most at home.

What it does

Sits on the surface and softens it. Because it is a balm rather than a cream, it stays put through washing-up and gardening instead of soaking straight in.

A little goes a long way. Warm it between your fingers first and it spreads much further than you expect.

• Calendula, slow-infused for six weeks — the reason this balm exists, and long used on dry, upset skin
• Coconut oil and shea butter — the rich, softening base
• Hemp oil — light, and high in the fatty acids skin uses to hold itself together
• Beeswax — the barrier that keeps it in place
• Chamomile and jojoba — quiet, settling, and easy on sensitive skin
• Frankincense, geranium, lavender, sweet orange and ylang ylang — the scent

How to use

Warm a small amount between your fingers until it melts, then press it into dry skin.

Best on slightly damp skin, straight after a bath or shower. Use as often as you like.

Questions

Is it greasy?
It is a balm, so it does feel rich going on. Warm it properly between your fingers first and use less than you think — that is the difference between rich and greasy.

Why has the colour changed between batches?
Calendula is a flower, and flowers vary. A batch infused in high summer runs deeper gold than one from the shoulder of the season.
